String Theory

Come and have a wonderful time with Nancy Glaspie learning the techniques for making string quilts.  String quilts are a creative way to use skinny lengths (aka strings) of fabric scraps.  This will be a unique class. No two projects will be that same and you can use any to all of your scrap fabric.  Project can also be made with "real"  fabric cut to size.  When you call to sign up for the class I will give you Nancy's phone number for additional directions.

Supplies needed:

  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies (thread, scissors, pins, etc.)
  • rotary cutter
  • Your favorite ruler 12 inches or less
Fabric requirements
  • Total yardage will be determined by the desired number of blocks and the size the strips are cut. Please have all strings cut and pressed before first class.
  • A good starting point for a lap quilt with a border would be the equivalent of about 20 fat quarters.  If you are using your string stash that has been accumulating for years, bring a bunch!  The more fabrics used, the scrappier the quilt will look.
  • The smaller the strings are cut, the more fabric the quilt will take since each strip will lose 1/2" to seam allowances.  Nancy's sample used strings cut 3/4" to 1 3/4" X  about 1/2 to a full width of fabric.
  • If you wish  to cut all strings the same size , you might choose 1 1/2"  strings that would finish at 1".  Blocks made with strings cut all the same size will need to be carefully matched to seams at adjoining blocks unless there is sashing between blocks.
  • You can achieve a crazy quilt effect with the use of foundation piecing.  If you choose foundation piecing pre washed and iron muslin works best.  If you chose the method come to the first class having already cut foundation pieces the size of the unfinished blocks.
